Description: Abstract algebra, a relatively young subject, is by nature a complex subject for students, as they fail to fully understand the concepts coined in this area. Given this, we want to find what difficulties the students have when studying the image of a homomorphism between groups. Therefore, this research aims to analyze the cognitive development of students of the Bachelor of Mathematics on the concept of the image of a homomorphism between groups. To address the problem, the APOE methodology will be used, which consists of a research cycle which is developed through three phases: the first, a theoretical analysis, and the second and third are the design and implementation of instruments and the analysis and data observation respectively. From the theoretical analysis, a preliminary genetic decomposition of the concept will be proposed. In the second and third components, the data collected will be observed, analyzed and verified by means of two questionnaires, one for diagnosis and the other for exploration, which are the instruments to validate or refine the proposed genetic decomposition; and with this determine if the students were able to demonstrate the proposed cognitive path in order to understand the image of a homomorphism between groups and establish that the mental structures proposed in the genetic decomposition are those necessary to understand said study concept.
