This work studies "Memorial del engaño" by Jorge Volpi, to demonstrate how the author
recreates himself as an imposter character and transforms his work through external
models to obtain a specific place within the literary field, following the guidelines of
Crack. The Latin American historical and literary context of the late 20th century is
analyzed to locate the author's previous work. A review is conducted based on Pierre
Bourdieu's theoretical assumptions regarding habits, group function, literary field, and
symbolic capital, through the Crack movement, in the training of Jorge Volpi for the
search of a space in the literary environment by the end of the 20th century. The aspects
of transtextuality proposed by Gerard Genette and their function in the entire work are
identified, as well as in the three sections that make up the book. Finally, as proposed by
Manuel Alberca, the function of imposture in the bond that links writer and reader is
analyzed. The Crack movement is a consequence of the social and cultural events of the
time, along with the change in generational interests and it emerged as a search for a space
among the publishing circuits; Jorge Volpi's work, following the proposal of the
manifesto, is characterized by an individual search for self-creation through the
transvaluation and criticism of literary models, whose decipherment requires the
complicity of the reader.
