Currently, motorcycles are one of the preferred means of transportation for people to get
around, mainly in countries where the monetary income is medium or low. Although the
motorcycle has several features that motivate its use, it also has a deficient safety that can protect
the user, which is why today there is a high rate of deaths and serious injuries in traffic accidents
involving these vehicles. As has been concluded in several works that consider the subject of
motorcycle safety, the most effective protective element that users can count on is the helmet,
which can reduce up to 69% the risk of suffering a serious head injury and 42% the risk of death.
To date there are several proposals that seek to improve the use of helmets by motorcyclists by
detecting this element, based on the use of machine learning tools. It has been identified that such
proposals do not ensure that the user uses the helmet at the time of detection, so the correction of
the helmet use action is not performed in real time, and therefore the risk of injury or death does
not decrease. This area of opportunity leads to the present work, whose main objective is to
generate an intelligent helmet detection model with a "prevention" perspective, which, after being
trained with images obtained from a camera mounted on the motorcycle, will be able to monitor
that the user uses the helmet throughout the entire route. As a result of using convolutional neural
networks, transfer learning and the new system approach, a model for detecting helmet use in
motorcycle drivers has been produced, which in its testing stage was able to correctly detect
97.24% of the given images of people with and without helmets. This innovative idea can be
improved by robustening the data with which the model is trained and tested, using new neural
network architectures, among other options, but this first approach is a good starting point for
future work.
