The study carried out on the novel by the Cuban writer Reinaldo Arenas Journey to
Havana with the purpose of knowing if the novel is fantastic, what is the purpose of
the use of fantastic resources and why is a fragmented novel, reached the conclusion
that, through each story, the novel goes through different manifestations of the
fantastic, making use of specific themes and it was discovered that Arenas liked
literary experimentation, in addition to making use of the resources of fantasy
literature to address issues that disturb him, avoiding the censorship that it could
have in case of having written a work of a realistic nature, for what it narrates from
the otherness, of the alien to the normative, of the exile, of the persecuted and
misunderstood as a way of transmitting a secret truth in order to let the reader
discover it; to reach these conclusions, a textual analysis was carried out, of the hero's
journey and another of the fantastic’s method, which are based on theories and
concepts of: Mieke Bal, Christopher Vogler, Tzvetan Todorov, Magali Velasco and
Omar Nieto. Finally, this work is relevant because there are few literary studies on
the last novel that Reinaldo Arenas wrote and adds a contribution to the studies
carried out on this author
