This work is divided into two parts. The first recounts the origins of the devotion and popular religious culture at the Sanctuary of Plateros, Fresnillo, Zacatecas, within the context of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro (Royal Road of the Interior). The second examines a recent and unexpected development: the construction and placement, in December 2021, of a large monument to the Holy Child of Atocha, located at the highest point of the community of Plateros. The study analyzes the behavior of devotees of this image over the past twenty years and the causes of the decline in religious tourism in the area. It also reviews the motivations of the ecclesiastical authorities of the Sanctuary of Plateros and the Diocese of Zacatecas for the creation and placement of the monument: to recover the splendor of the pilgrimages and religious tourism that once placed this center third in Mexico in this regard.en_US
