| Abstract: | La Organización de las Naciones Unidas define la pobreza como “la condición caracterizada por una privación severa de necesidades humanas básicas, incluyendo alimentos, agua potable, instalaciones sanitarias, salud, vivienda, educación e información” . Esta carestía ha sido una constante transversal en la historia de la humanidad que, como elemento coyuntural de causas multifactoriales, ha producido cientos de consecuencias diversas (hambrunas, epidemias, mortandades, revoluciones sociales…), llegando incluso a modificar las estructuras socioeconómicas sobre las que se asientan los territorios que se han visto afectados. Desde la posición del historiador, y por su complejidad, esta situación no se presenta como nueva ni sorprendente; pero lo que sí extraña es comprobar cómo en ciertas épocas históricas atravesadas por el discurso del progreso no sólo no se registra una disminución de la pobreza y sus derivados, sino hasta un incremento de la misma, cuestionando así la congruencia, validez y eficacia del proyecto moderno en su aplicación a la realidad concreta de una sociedad. |
| Description: | The United Nations defines poverty as "the condition characterized by severe deprivation of basic human needs, including food, drinking water, sanitation, health, housing, education, and information." . This scarcity has been a constant feature throughout the history of humanity which, as a circumstantial element with multiple causes, has produced hundreds of different consequences (famines, epidemics, deaths, social revolutions, etc.), even modifying the socioeconomic structures on which the affected territories are based. From a historian's perspective, and due to its complexity, this situation is From a historian's perspective, and given its complexity, this situation is neither new nor surprising; but what is strange is to see how, in certain historical periods marked by the discourse of progress, not only is there no decrease in poverty and its derivatives, but even an increase in it, thus questioning the consistency, validity, and effectiveness of the modern project in its application to the concrete reality of a society. |
