Based on a bibliographic selection of recent edition, this is a reflection on some of
the most problematic aspects of violence: criminality, offenses, and insecurity in the
Countries of the North Triangle (Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras), the present
analysis intends to contribute with elements that will help develop a better
understanding and comprehension of its evolution and intensification which only
came once these countries concluded their democratization processes, which
apparently facilitated economic growth in the region. The methodology used in the
process was analytic and qualitative, with a strong focus on the contributions made
by Dammert and Arias (2007), Figueroa (2013), Devia, Ortega y Niño (2016),
Andrade (2015) Jiménez (2016), Cáceres (2017) and data extracted from reports
issued by PNUD (2009; 2015), OIT (2016), and official institutions from each
Country. Among the main or most important elements we considered a) the peace
process as a synonim of democratization, and among the main economic aspects:
b) Deindustrialization and its repercussions on the variables of employment and sub
employment, income and wage, poverty and inequality, and its impact on the c)
increase of homicides and delinquency (-thievery of goods and belongings and
private property). The article concludes that neither politic democratization nor
economic growth have brought security to the population, on the contrary, they’ve
had a negative impact on society in general, triggering the high homicide and robbery
rates that characterize the Countries in the North Triangle.
